Why is AP Müzik Teorisi important?
Whether you choose 1:1 tutoring or our small-group AP courses, our experienced AP instructors map the path to a 5. Targeted AP Müzik Teorisi preparation built around your starting point and your target score.
AP Music Theory covers musical notation, harmony, melody, rhythm and aural skills. It is a strong foundation for students considering music performance, composition, music education or audio engineering, and the exam tests both written theory and ear training.
TestPrep Europe's AP tutoring program is fully personalised: every lesson focuses on your specific weak topics, FRQ/essay technique, and exam-day strategy. Our instructors track the College Board's current curriculum and scoring rubrics closely so the work you do with us mirrors what is rewarded on the actual exam. Group cohorts (max 6 students) keep weekly accountability high while preserving individual attention.
AP Müzik Teorisi exam structure
Review the section-by-section breakdown of the AP Müzik Teorisi exam, administered worldwide by the College Board every May. Each section is drilled separately in our 1:1 and small-group programs so you build strategy for the parts of the test that matter most to your score.
Section I: Multiple Choice
45%75 questions in roughly 1 hour 20 minutes, combining aural and non-aural questions.
Section II-A: Free Response (written)
45%7 questions in roughly 1 hour 10 minutes: 2 melodic dictation, 2 harmonic dictation, part writing from figured bass, part writing from Roman numerals, and bass-line composition/melody harmonization.
Section II-B: Sight Singing
10%2 questions in roughly 10 minutes, sung at sight.
Exam delivery
Hybrid digital (from May 2027)Audio prompts and multiple-choice questions are delivered in Bluebook; free-response questions and sight-singing melodies appear in a paper booklet and answers are handwritten. The exam structure itself is unchanged.
AP Müzik Teorisi curriculum coverage
Unit-by-unit summary of the topics we cover, mapped to the College Board's official Course and Exam Description (CED). In our 1:1 lessons each unit is paced and weighted to the individual student.
AP Müzik Teorisi study strategies
Strategies our AP instructors recommend for top-scoring AP Müzik Teorisi preparation. We integrate these techniques directly into 1:1 sessions and small-group practice rounds.
Practise sight-singing for 15 minutes and dictation for 15 minutes every day.
Memorise the voice-leading rules (no parallel fifths/octaves, proper resolution) for part writing.
Listen to real repertoire and identify chord progressions by ear.
Time at a piano or other instrument hugely accelerates aural-skills development.
About AP Müzik Teorisi
AP Music Theory is a technical course covering musical notation, harmony, voice leading and aural skills. Students start with reading notation and rhythm, progress through intervals, scales and chords, and then study functional harmony and four-part SATB voice leading. The aural side of the course develops melodic and harmonic dictation and sight-singing. The exam tests both written theory and listening ability. Our programme balances written analysis with daily ear-training practice and is designed for students who already have a basic musical foundation.
1:1 AP tutoring — personalised support
Our 1:1 AP tutoring is built entirely around the student's current knowledge level and target score. Each session focuses on your specific weak topics, drills exam-format practice questions, and teaches FRQ / essay technique with the College Board's scoring rubric in front of us. Our instructors stay current with every CED revision so the work you put in mirrors what gets rewarded in May.
Small-group AP courses — structured cohorts
Our small-group AP courses (max 6 students) give you a structured weekly programme alongside students chasing the same target. The syllabus tracks the College Board CED unit-by-unit and includes weekly quizzes plus full-length mock exams to benchmark progress. All cohorts are delivered live online, so students can join from anywhere in Europe.
What is AP Music Theory tutoring?
AP Music Theory tutoring at TestPrep Europe builds the aural, written and analytical skills that the College Board examines: melodic and harmonic dictation, sight-singing, part-writing, and analysis of common-practice tonal music. Tutoring proceeds from foundations (intervals, scales, triads) through to four-part voice leading, secondary functions and modulations.
- All four exam components (multiple choice, free response, sight-singing, dictation) drilled separately
- Common-practice voice-leading rules taught with the College Board's penalty list in view
- Sight-singing built up methodically using solfège and scale-degree numbers
- Aural skills practised daily — interval, chord-quality and dictation drills
Common AP Music Theory mistakes
HataVoice-leading errors that lose the same point repeatedly (parallel fifths/octaves, doubled leading tone).
DüzeltmeMaintain an explicit voice-leading checklist on every part-writing answer; the rubric penalises predictable errors more than unusual ones.
HataSight-singing started without a tonic centre.
DüzeltmeEstablish the tonic with a sung scale or arpeggio before reading the line; almost all sight-singing slips trace back to losing tonal centre.
HataMelodic dictation written rhythm-then-pitch instead of together.
DüzeltmeCapture rhythm and contour in the first hearing, then add pitches; the AP listening pace is too fast to write linearly.
HataRoman numerals used without inversion figures.
DüzeltmeAP rubrics expect figured-bass inversions (e.g. V6, ii42). Plain Roman numerals are partial answers.
HataConfusing modulation and tonicization.
DüzeltmeA short secondary dominant is tonicization, not modulation. Be explicit about cadence and duration before relabelling the key.

How TestPrep Europe teaches AP Music Theory
Aural skills daily, not weekly
Aural ability decays without daily exposure. We schedule short daily sight-singing and dictation drills between sessions.
Voice-leading by checklist
The College Board penalises a known list of errors. We teach an explicit pre-submission checklist so students never lose points to repeat mistakes.
Notation discipline
Inversions, accidentals, tied rhythms — small notational habits affect rubric outcomes. We treat notation as part of the rubric, not as background.
Sıkça sorulan sorular
Do I need to read music to start?
Basic notation is required. We can refresh fundamentals quickly, but students starting from zero typically need extra weeks before the syllabus proper.
Does it matter which instrument I play?
Not for the rubric, but pianists often find part-writing visualisation easier. Singers usually have the strongest sight-singing baseline.
How aural-heavy is the exam?
Roughly half. Multiple-choice listening, melodic and harmonic dictation, and sight-singing together carry significant weight.
How many tutoring hours are typical?
Students with several years of formal music training often book 30–45 hours; students starting from scratch usually need more. We begin with a free diagnostic.
