AP Çince exam structure
Review the section-by-section breakdown of the AP Çince exam, administered worldwide by the College Board every May. Each section is drilled separately in our 1:1 and small-group programs so you build strategy for the parts of the test that matter most to your score.
Section I: Free Response
50%4 tasks in 40-45 minutes: project presentation (3 minutes prep, 3 minutes presenting, 20%), project Q&A (4 questions, 40 seconds each, 15%), story narration (7.5%) and email response (7.5%) — the last two share 30 minutes.
Section II: Multiple Choice
50%55 questions in 1 hour 5 minutes: Part A listening (25 questions, 25 minutes, 25%) and Part B reading (30 questions, 40 minutes, 25%).
Exam delivery
Fully digitalRevised for 2026-27: the exam runs in Bluebook and paper exams are discontinued. The Personalized Project Reference is submitted through the AP Digital Portfolio by April 30.
AP Çince curriculum coverage

About AP Çince
AP Chinese Language and Culture is an advanced Mandarin course covering both simplified and traditional characters and integrating reading, writing, listening and speaking. The exam includes distinctive tasks such as story narration (a four-image picture sequence) and a computer-based conversation simulation. The cultural-comparison section asks students to compare China with their own culture using specific examples. Our programme adapts to each student's starting level: heritage speakers focus on academic Chinese and exam strategy, while non-heritage speakers build core language skills up to exam standard.
1:1 AP tutoring — personalised support
Our 1:1 AP tutoring is built entirely around the student's current knowledge level and target score. Each session focuses on your specific weak topics, drills exam-format practice questions, and teaches FRQ / essay technique with the College Board's scoring rubric in front of us. Small-group AP courses — structured cohorts
Our small-group AP courses (max 6 students) give you a structured weekly programme alongside students chasing the same target. The syllabus tracks the College Board CED unit-by-unit and includes weekly quizzes plus full-length mock exams to benchmark progress. All cohorts are delivered live online, so students can join from anywhere in Europe.
What is AP Chinese Language and Culture tutoring?
AP Chinese Language and Culture tutoring at TestPrep Europe builds proficiency across listening, reading, speaking and writing at the Intermediate-Mid to Intermediate-High level. The exam is computer-delivered and uses simplified or traditional characters; tasks include narrative and email writing, cultural presentation, and conversation, with cultural content from greater China.

Input speed as a core skill
AP Chinese is computer-delivered. We drill IME input speed and accuracy until it stops being a bottleneck on the writing tasks.
Cultural content as named evidence
Students keep a small bank of named festivals, regional foods, artists and historical figures, ready to deploy in the cultural presentation.
Writing tasks as templates
Narrative writing and email reply have predictable structures. We practise the templates until automatic, leaving cognitive room for content.

Is AP Chinese only for heritage speakers?
No — non-heritage students with strong school study reach the Intermediate-Mid threshold and score well. The main hurdles for non-heritage students are input speed and character recognition under time pressure.
Should I use simplified or traditional characters?
Either is accepted, but be consistent across all tasks. Most schools teach simplified; students from Taiwan or Hong Kong sometimes prefer traditional.
How important is character handwriting?
Not directly — the exam is computer-delivered, so input is keyboard-based with IME. Handwriting practice still helps with character recognition.
How many tutoring hours are typical?
Heritage speakers usually book 25–40 hours focused on rubric and writing; non-heritage students often book more, especially for input speed and character recognition. We start with a free diagnostic.
