About the subject

AP Business with Personal Finance: what it covers and who it suits

AP Business with Personal Finance is a new AP course launching in the 2026-27 school year, designed as the equivalent of a one-semester college introduction to business. It covers entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, accounting and management through real company cases, and layers in the full personal-finance standards from the Council for Economic Education and the Jump$tart Coalition. For students heading towards business, economics or entrepreneurship it evidences both subject interest and the ability to carry a project to completion.

AP Business with Personal Finance launches in the 2026-27 school year as part of College Board's AP Career Kickstart programme. It is designed as the equivalent of a one-semester, college-level introduction to business and has no prerequisites. Students work through entrepreneurship, marketing, finance, accounting and management using real company cases and project-based learning. Two projects are required: the Business Canvas project, developed across the year and validated on exam day by a free-response question worth 15% of the exam score; and the Financial Advisor project that closes Unit 5, which is a required part of the course but does not count towards the exam score. From 2027 the exam is delivered entirely in the Bluebook app. Our programme supports both the exam sections and the running of the two projects.

One-to-one AP Business with Personal Finance tutoring

Our one-to-one AP tutoring is built entirely around the student's current level and target score. Each lesson works on your specific weak topics, drills exam-format questions and teaches free-response and essay technique with the College Board's scoring guidelines in front of us. Our tutors follow every revision of the Course and Exam Description, so the work you put in matches what is rewarded in May.

AP Business with Personal Finance small-group course

Our small-group AP courses (no more than 6 students per class) give you a structured weekly programme alongside students aiming for the same score. The syllabus follows the College Board's Course and Exam Description unit by unit, and every lesson is taught live online.

Exam

AP Business with Personal Finance exam format

The College Board runs the AP Business with Personal Finance exam every May. Sections, timing and weighting:

  • Section I: Multiple Choice

    60%

60 questions in 1 hour 10 minutes, largely as sets of 3-4 questions sharing a stimulus.

  • Section II-A: Business Canvas Project Exam-Day Validation

    15%

1 question in 25 minutes. You pitch the product idea you developed during the year, explain your hypothesis testing and describe a challenge to its viability.

  • Section II-B: Free Response

    25%

3 questions in 1 hour 5 minutes: personal finance (5%), business concept application (5%) and a business decision (15%).

  • Exam delivery

    Fully digital

The whole exam runs in the Bluebook app. A four-function calculator is permitted (handheld or the built-in Desmos). 2027 exam date: 4 May 2027.

How do I register for the exam?

  • Free-response question 1 (15%) is about your own Business Canvas Project. The project itself is never sent to College Board; only your written answer on exam day is scored. Our group course takes you through the project step by step.

Good to know

  • College Board has not yet published the May 2028 AP exam schedule, so the exam date is estimated from the 2027 schedule. Once it is confirmed, we will adjust the programme to match.
  • 50 lessons in all: 40 unit lessons, 2 Business Canvas project lessons, 6 mock-exam walkthroughs and 2 timed FRQ 1 rehearsals.
  • Business Canvas Project: a kickoff lesson in Unit 1, a checkpoint after Unit 3 (your hypothesis tests and income statement) and two timed FRQ 1 rehearsals before the exam. These four lessons come out of the ten mock-exam walkthroughs, which drop to six; no unit lesson is cut. FRQ 1 asks about your own project, so you run it: we give feedback and push you to test your assumptions, but we don't pick your business or write it for you.

Advice

AP Business with Personal Finance: common mistakes and study tips

Study tips

  • Keep the Business Canvas project alive all year: the exam-day question asks about YOUR project, not a topic you can revise for.
  • Study the CED's required company cases (Bombas, Stanley, Hershey, Canva) alongside the concepts — questions are built on exactly this kind of real example.
  • Personal finance sits in its own unit but appears on the exam as 12-15 questions distributed through Units 1-4, not as a separate add-on.
  • On the decision question (Q4), write the reasoning and the rejected alternative, not just the choice — that is where the marks separate.

FAQ

AP Business with Personal Finance Prep — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask most about AP Business with Personal Finance preparation.

It launches in 2026-27 and availability depends on your school's AP programme. Students can sit AP exams independently, and one-to-one preparation matters here because the Business Canvas project has to be developed alongside the content.

Unit 5: Personal Goals, Budgeting, and Investing is not assessed in the multiple-choice section; it is assessed through the Financial Advisor project instead. Personal finance content also appears in the 12-15 questions distributed across Units 1-4.

No. The economics courses are theory- and model-driven; this one is applied business and personal finance — building a business model, marketing, accounting statements and budgeting. They complement each other rather than substitute.

The money-back guarantee covers live lessons. If you are not satisfied after your first private lesson, we refund your payment in full. We do not offer free trial lessons. Payment is required before your first lesson.

You can cancel a lesson package at any time. Lessons already given are charged at the single-lesson price and the rest is refunded. The first-lesson guarantee applies on top.

Lessons cancelled less than 3 hours before the start count as taken and are not refunded. A lesson that has not been paid for 3 hours before it starts is cancelled automatically.
