AP Environmental Science: what it covers and who it suits

AP Environmental Science (APES) tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers all nine units — ecosystems through global change — across MCQ and FRQ formats. AP Environmental Science (APES) is an interdisciplinary course connecting ecology, earth science, chemistry and policy. It is well-suited to students interested in environmental engineering, public health, urban planning or sustainability policy, and it pairs unusually well with AP Biology or AP Human Geography.

AP Environmental Science integrates the science and policy of environmental issues into a single course. Students start with ecosystem ecology and biodiversity, move through population dynamics, soil and water resources, energy systems, pollution and finally climate change and international policy. Crucially, APES asks students not just to describe environmental problems but to reason quantitatively about them: a typical FRQ might require computing energy yields, projecting population growth or interpreting a data table or graph. Our programme pairs case-study discussion with FRQ-writing practice and calculation workshops to address both halves of the exam.

AP Environmental Science exam format

The College Board runs the AP Environmental Science exam every May. Sections, timing and weighting:

  • Section I: Multiple Choice

    60%

    80 questions in 1 hour 30 minutes. A four-function (with square root) or scientific calculator is allowed; graphing calculators are not.

  • Section II: Free Response

    40%

    3 questions in 1 hour 10 minutes: Design an investigation, Analyze and interpret quantitative data, and Analyze an environmental problem doing calculations. Each asks you to propose solutions.

How do I register for the exam?
  • You can take AP Exams without taking the AP course at your school, but you can't register on your own.
  • Find a school that runs AP Exams and ask its AP coordinator to place you in an "exam only" section; enter the join code in My AP as soon as you get it. In some countries, College Board also lists authorized AP test centers you can register with directly.
  • Schools place their exam orders by mid-November; late additions, up to about mid-March, cost extra. Contact schools by the end of October at the latest.
  • College Board's AP Course Ledger lists the schools that offer AP; search it by country and city.

    Calculation FRQs are short by design. We drill mental and paper arithmetic so students don't lose easy points to careless slips.

  • Case-study evidence banks

    Each student keeps a bank of named environmental case studies, organised by topic, so FRQs are answered with specific examples rather than generic claims.

  • Mitigation as the closing move

    Part (d) of most FRQs asks for mitigation or policy. We practise this as a fixed routine rather than as an afterthought.

AP Environmental Science: common mistakes and study tips

  • MistakeLeaning on the calculator and losing the working the FRQ asks you to show.

    FixPractise scientific-notation arithmetic, dimensional analysis and ratio reasoning by hand. Most APES calculation FRQs are designed for mental or paper arithmetic.

  • MistakeVague 'pollution' answers ('it harms the environment').

    FixSpecify the pollutant, source, mechanism of harm, and named example. The rubric rewards specificity over generality.

  • MistakeMixing up greenhouse gases and ozone-depleting substances.

    FixTabulate the major gases by source, lifetime and impact (greenhouse vs ozone vs both) and rehearse the table before each FRQ practice.

  • MistakeEcology answers without quantitative reasoning.

    FixBring numbers — energy transfer rates, biodiversity indices, population growth rates — not adjectives.

  • MistakeConfusing primary, secondary and tertiary succession contexts.

    FixMatch succession type to the disturbance type; practise contrasting scenarios in early units.

  • MistakeForgetting policy / mitigation in part-(d) FRQs.

    FixAlmost every FRQ ends with a mitigation or policy question. Build a small bank of named policies (Clean Air Act, Montreal Protocol, etc.).

Study tips

  • On the calculation FRQ, unit conversions are where most students lose points — practise dimensional analysis until it is automatic.
  • Memorise the major environmental laws and treaties (Clean Air Act, Paris Agreement, Montreal Protocol) — they appear regularly.
  • Anchor every topic to a case study; APES rewards students who can name a specific event for each concept.
  • On energy questions, learn to compute energy per unit and efficiency — the exam tests both repeatedly.

AP Environmental Science Prep — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask most about AP Environmental Science preparation.

No. The exam has nine units of content, dense vocabulary, and quantitative FRQs that expect you to show every step of your working. It's accessible but it isn't easy.

Yes — APES is often taken in 10th or 11th grade alongside Biology or Chemistry. The maths stays at algebra, and content can be learned from scratch with structured study.

Energy transfer, population growth, half-life, dilution, and percent-change problems. A four-function or scientific calculator is allowed, but the numbers are designed to be worked quickly by hand, so we drill scientific notation and ratio arithmetic to make these reflexive.

Students with a science base usually book 25–40 hours; students starting from scratch often book more.

A cohort takes 24 students, taught in classes of at most 6 because the cohort is split by level. Lessons are live and online, and every lesson is recorded; each recording stays available for 14 days from the lesson date.
