AP Cybersecurity: what it covers and who it suits

AP Cybersecurity launches in 2026-27 and is equivalent to a first-year college introduction to cybersecurity. Developed with college faculty and industry partners, it aligns with the NICE Workforce Framework. For students heading towards computer science, software engineering or information systems it complements the programming focus of AP Computer Science A with the defensive and risk-analysis side of the field.

AP Cybersecurity launches in the 2026-27 school year as part of College Board's AP Career Kickstart programme. It is equivalent to a one-semester college introduction to cybersecurity and has no prerequisites. The course follows a defence-in-depth approach across five units, from physical spaces to networks, devices, applications and data, with each unit built on scenarios drawn from what cybersecurity professionals actually do. One detail matters for revision planning: College Board does not publish per-unit exam weightings for this course. The multiple-choice section is weighted by three skill categories — Analyze Risk, Mitigate Risk and Detect Attacks, each 25-40% of that section — so a study plan should be organised by skill rather than marched through unit by unit. Our programme puts those three skills at the centre and drills the log-and-configuration reading that the single free-response question demands.

AP Cybersecurity exam format

The College Board runs the AP Cybersecurity exam every May. Sections, timing and weighting:

  • Section I: Multiple Choice

    70%

    60 questions in 1 hour 20 minutes — individual questions plus sets of 2-4 sharing a stimulus.

  • Section II: Free Response

    30%

    1 question in 50 minutes — Device Security Analysis. You are given security policies, firewall configurations, file-system permissions and log files for a single device, and must identify security issues, detect evidence of attacks and evaluate controls.

  • Exam delivery

    Fully digital

    The whole exam runs in the Bluebook app. There is no performance task and no scored project component. 2027 exam date: 5 May 2027.

Study tips

  • The single free-response question hands you real configuration and log output — practise reading artefacts, not memorising definitions.
  • College Board weights the multiple-choice section by skill category, not by unit: Analyze Risk, Mitigate Risk and Detect Attacks. Build your revision around those three.
  • For every unit, get into the habit of tracing attack → vulnerability → mitigation → detection. That chain is what the exam interrogates.
  • Follow defence-in-depth through one worked example from physical space all the way to data — the course is built on that axis.

AP Cybersecurity Prep — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask most about AP Cybersecurity preparation.

Yes, there is no prerequisite. CS A is programming-focused (Java); Cybersecurity is about defence, risk analysis and incident detection. Neither requires the other, but together they make a strong computer-science profile.

No. AP Cybersecurity has no scored project component — the entire score comes from exam day: 60 multiple-choice questions and one free-response question.

College Board does not publish per-unit percentages for this exam. Weighting is given by three skill categories instead, each 25-40% of the multiple-choice section. Unit percentages you may find on other sites are not official.
