IB English B: what it covers and who it suits
IB English B tutoring is for students learning English as an additional language. It covers the five prescribed themes — Identities, Experiences, Human ingenuity, Social organization, Sharing the planet — and the productive (Paper 1: writing), receptive (Paper 2: listening and reading) and interactive (Individual Oral) skills. HL adds two literary works which appear directly in the Individual Oral.

Type of review
How is the A–E grade estimated?
The IB sets the Extended Essay's grade boundaries again every session; there is no fixed table. So the estimate follows the grade descriptors the IB asks schools to use for predicted grades. The IB publishes your final grade at the end of the session.

The English B individual oral lasts 12–15 minutes and is worth 25%. At SL it starts from a visual stimulus; at HL from an extract of one of the two literary works studied (15 and 20 minutes of preparation respectively).

How lessons work
Text-type as a syllabus item
Blog, speech, formal letter, brochure, report — we teach the conventions of each as separate sub-skills, because Paper 1 marks them explicitly.
Receptive skills with source grounding
Paper 2 rewards matching answers to the source. We practise locate-then-paraphrase rather than free recall.
HL literary works without anxiety
Two literary works are short and chosen for accessibility. We treat them as IO scaffolding, not as English-A-level literary criticism.
Advice
IB English B: common mistakes and study tips
MistakePaper 1 writing in the wrong text type.
FixEach prompt specifies the text type (blog, speech, formal letter, etc.). Conventions of that text type are a band descriptor; getting them wrong caps the score.
MistakeHL Individual Oral that ignores the literary work.
FixHL Oral is built around an extract from a literary work studied. SL framing won't pass the rubric.
MistakeTranslating from L1 word for word.
FixDirect translation produces unidiomatic English. We build collocation and chunking habits so output sounds native-like.
MistakeReceptive answers paraphrased instead of source-grounded.
FixPaper 2 awards points for matching the text. Heavy paraphrase often misses the exact wording the rubric expects.
MistakeVocabulary used confidently but inaccurately.
FixConfident but misused vocabulary caps the band. We focus on accurate usage at B2/C1 over showy C2 reach.
