Why us?

Why choose IB Chemistry tutoring?

IB Chemistry covers a wide syllabus from atomic structure and bonding to organic chemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics and equilibrium. It demands both theoretical understanding and practical lab skills, with significant additional depth at HL.

Conceptual depth

We teach chemistry from the molecular level up so students understand rather than memorise — making advanced topics accessible.

Calculations and problem solving

Step-by-step strategies for the trickier calculations: moles, buffers, entropy and enthalpy.

Lab work and IA

Hands-on guidance for experimental design, data collection, titration and spectroscopy.

Using the Data Booklet

Practice in selecting the right formula and constants from the Data Booklet under exam conditions.

Curriculum

IB Chemistry curriculum and topics

The IB Chemistry syllabus (first assessment 2025) is organised under two unifying themes: Structure and Reactivity. HL students study additional content and tackle deeper analysis.

SLStandard Level topics

Structure 1: Models of the Particulate Nature of Matter (atomic structure, periodicity)
Structure 2: Models of Bonding and Structure (chemical bonding, molecular structure)
Structure 3: Classification of Matter (introduction to organic chemistry)
Reactivity 1: What Drives Chemical Reactions? (enthalpy, entropy, Gibbs energy)
Reactivity 2: How Much, How Fast, How Far? (stoichiometry, kinetics, equilibrium)
Reactivity 3: What Are the Mechanisms of Chemical Change? (proton/electron transfer, organic mechanisms)

IA support

IB Chemistry Scientific Investigation (IA) support

Under the new IB Chemistry syllabus (first assessment 2025), the Internal Assessment is the 'Scientific Investigation' — an independent experimental study worth 20% of the final grade, marked across four criteria.

Where we support you through the IA

  • 1Research Design: research question, variable control, safety
  • 2Data Analysis: quantitative and qualitative data, processing, calculations
  • 3Conclusion: connecting findings to chemical theory
  • 4Evaluation: error sources and improvement suggestions
  • 5Individual report within a 3,000-word limit

IB Chemistry is the fundamental science of matter — its structure, properties and transformations. The course builds analytical thinking, problem-solving and scientific communication, and is essential for students targeting medicine, pharmacy, chemical engineering or biochemistry.

Our IB Chemistry programme is personalised to each student's level and goals. Experienced IB tutors handle every topic in an exam-focused way, from concepts through to calculations. With IA support, past-paper strategies and regular mock exams we prepare students for the highest grades.

What is IB Chemistry tutoring?

IB Chemistry tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers SL and HL across the current syllabus structures (Structure 1–3, Reactivity 1–3) along with Paper 1, Paper 2 and the Internal Assessment. The IA — a 6–10 page individual investigation — is supported with academic integrity in mind, focusing on research question design, data analysis and uncertainty rather than written content.

  • Full SL / HL coverage of Structure and Reactivity strands
  • Paper 1 (multiple choice / data) and Paper 2 (extended response) drilled as distinct genres
  • IA support — research question, data, uncertainty, evaluation — with academic integrity
  • Tools-1 / 2 / 3 (experimental, technology, mathematics) integrated across topics

Common IB Chemistry mistakes

HataWrong significant figures or units in data-processing questions.

DüzeltmeMatch sig-figs to the least precise raw measurement; carry units through every step. The IB markscheme penalises both inconsistencies.

HataVague mechanism descriptions ('the molecule reacts').

DüzeltmeSpecify bond breaking, bond formation, electron movement, and the role of any catalyst — IB rewards mechanistic detail in HL extended response.

HataEquilibrium answers from total moles instead of equilibrium concentrations.

DüzeltmeAlways build an ICE table, then translate it into Kc; never skip the table even on Paper 2.

HataIgnoring uncertainty in IA data analysis.

DüzeltmeEvery measured quantity needs an absolute uncertainty; propagate to the final result. IA marks for analysis depend on it.

HataAcid-base answers that confuse strong/weak with concentrated/dilute.

DüzeltmeUse Ka and pH explicitly; 'strong' refers to dissociation, 'concentrated' refers to amount.

HataChoosing an IA research question that's too broad or untestable.

DüzeltmeSpend time narrowing to a single independent variable, single dependent variable, with clear control variables — broader questions don't reward more marks.

How TestPrep Europe teaches IB Chemistry

IA support with academic integrity

We coach research-question design, data analysis, uncertainty propagation and evaluation — but the writing and conclusions remain the student's own work. We do not write or co-author IAs.

Paper 1 vs Paper 2 as different exams

Paper 1 rewards speed and pattern recognition; Paper 2 rewards extended written explanation. We drill them separately because the same topic looks different in each paper.

Markscheme literacy

Past papers are scored against IBO markschemes so students learn which exact words and structures earn marks — and which equivalents don't.

Sıkça sorulan sorular

What's the difference between SL and HL Chemistry?

HL adds depth on every topic — extra organic mechanisms, more equilibrium and acid-base, and HL-only Reactivity 3 content. The papers are longer and the IA is the same length but assessed at HL standard.

How much help can a tutor give on the IA?

We discuss research questions, methodology, data analysis techniques and uncertainty propagation, and we give feedback on drafts — but the writing, raw data and final conclusions must be the student's. This is the IBO academic-integrity boundary.

Is the new syllabus very different from the old one?

The structure is rebuilt around Structure 1–3 / Reactivity 1–3 themes rather than topic numbers, but most underlying content is preserved. We teach to the current syllabus only.

How many tutoring hours are typical for IB Chemistry?

Students with a strong IGCSE / GCSE background usually book 50–80 hours over the two years; HL students aiming at 7 typically book more. We start with a free diagnostic.
