IA support

IB Economics Internal Assessment (Commentary) support

The IB Economics IA requires three commentaries (max 800 words each), each from a different syllabus section.

Where we support you through the IA

  • 1Selecting suitable news articles and citing sources
  • 2Applying relevant economic theory and concepts
  • 3Drawing accurate, fully labelled diagrams
  • 4Economic evaluation and critical analysis
  • 5Ensuring variety across syllabus sections

IB Economics offers a critical lens on the world while building analytical and academic-writing skills. It is an excellent foundation for students targeting business, finance, international relations, law or public policy.

At TestPrep Europe we strengthen the theoretical foundations and reinforce them with real-world applications. Through diagram drawing, essay technique and commentary support, we drive students towards exam success.

What is IB Economics tutoring?

IB Economics tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers SL and HL across the four units — introduction, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the global economy — with full IA portfolio support (three commentaries based on real-world articles). The exam rewards clear diagrams, evaluation language, and real-world examples — not memorised theory.

  • Full SL / HL coverage of all four units; HL extension drilled in parallel
  • Paper 1 (extended response), Paper 2 (data response) and HL Paper 3 (quantitative) drilled separately
  • IA portfolio — three real-world-article commentaries — supported with academic integrity
  • Diagrams treated as a core skill, not as decoration

Common IB Economics mistakes

HataDiagrams without labelled axes, curves and equilibrium points.

DüzeltmeEvery diagram needs full labels (P, Q, S, D, equilibrium) before any prose; unlabelled diagrams earn zero.

HataNaming a theory without applying it.

DüzeltmeAfter every theory statement, write 'in this case' followed by the specific real-world example or data point.

HataWeak evaluation in 15-mark questions.

DüzeltmeEvaluation needs trade-offs (short vs long run, stakeholder impact, magnitude, time, assumptions). One-sided answers cap the mark.

HataMissing real-world examples in IA commentaries.

DüzeltmeEach IA commentary is built around a single real-world article — the commentary must engage the article, not just borrow its topic.

HataHL Paper 3 calculations without showing units / steps.

DüzeltmeAlways show the formula, substitution, and units. Final-answer-only responses lose method marks even when the number is right.

HataConfusing macroeconomic schools of thought.

DüzeltmeBe explicit about which model — classical, Keynesian, monetarist, new classical — is being applied; the markscheme rewards correct school attribution.

How TestPrep Europe teaches IB Economics

Diagram-first answers

Every essay starts with a fully labelled diagram before any prose. The diagram fixes the analysis and earns marks the prose alone won't.

Evaluation as a structured technique

Evaluation is taught as a four-pillar checklist — short vs long run, stakeholders, magnitude / time, assumptions — not as 'add a critical sentence at the end'.

IA with academic integrity

We help students choose articles, plan diagrams and evaluations, and give feedback on drafts. The article selection, the writing and the final commentary remain the student's work — this is the IBO academic-integrity boundary.

Sıkça sorulan sorular

What's new in HL compared to SL?

HL adds Paper 3 (a quantitative paper using calculations and policy recommendations), more depth on each unit, and HL-only theory of the firm content. The IA is the same task assessed at HL standard.

Do I need a maths background?

SL is mostly conceptual with light calculation. HL Paper 3 requires comfortable algebra and proportional reasoning — IB Math AI SL is enough; AA is helpful but not required.

How much help can a tutor give on the IA?

We help with article choice, diagram planning, evaluation structure and draft feedback. The article reading, diagrams and writing must be the student's own; this is the IBO academic-integrity boundary.

Is IB Economics easier than IB Business?

Different rather than easier. Economics is more model-heavy and quantitative; Business is more case-study-driven. Students confident with diagrams and theory often prefer Economics.
