IB ESS tutoring follows the guide first examined in May 2026, which offers ESS at HL as well as SL for the first time. IB ESS is an interdisciplinary course that combines the methods of the sciences with those of individuals and societies. Under the guide first examined in May 2026 it is offered at HL as well as SL, and it can count as a Group 3 subject, a Group 4 subject, or both.

HL exam questions ask for extra insight from the HL lenses: Environmental law, Environmental and ecological economics, and Environmental ethics.
IB ESS gives a strong grounding for students heading towards environmental science, environmental engineering, urban planning or public policy. The course runs to 150 teaching hours at SL and 240 at HL, and includes the collaborative sciences project.
Because it can satisfy Group 3 and Group 4 together, ESS is a strategic choice for students planning their course load: counted as both, it frees a place for an additional subject from another group. The IB sets the Extended Essay's grade boundaries again every session; there is no fixed table. So the estimate follows the grade descriptors the IB asks schools to use for predicted grades. The IB publishes your final grade at the end of the session.

How lessons work
EVS as a habitual lens
We use EVS framing in every topic, not just Topic 1 Foundation, so by the exam students reach for it automatically on evaluation questions.
Paper 1 as a data paper
Paper 1 rewards students who work through the resource booklet methodically. We drill the annotation routine before any case-study practice.
IA with academic integrity
Research question, method and data collection are scaffolded, but the analysis and conclusion remain the student's own work. Students may share a method in a small group, as long as each has a different independent or dependent variable and their own data.
Advice

FixEvaluation means weighing strengths and limitations, and in ESS that usually includes perspectives: a technocentric and an ecocentric reading of the same strategy can reach different conclusions.

FixTopic 1 Foundation classifies environmental value systems as technocentric, anthropocentric or ecocentric. Where a question invites it, name the perspective explicitly rather than leaving it implied.
MistakeQuantitative responses without units or working.
FixProductivity and footprint calculations need units, formula and substitution. Method marks survive arithmetic slips.
MistakeAn IA research question the method cannot answer.
FixThe individual investigation answers the student's own research question with data they collect and analyse. A vague question or a mismatched method can't be rescued at the analysis stage.
MistakePaper 1 answers that ignore the case-study data.
