About the subject
IB Visual Arts: what it covers and who it suits
IB Visual Arts tutoring follows the new guide first assessed in May 2027, built on three core areas: Create, Connect and Communicate. The assessed tasks are the Art-making Inquiries Portfolio, the Connections Study (SL) or Artist Project (HL), and the Resolved Artworks. Tutoring is mentor-style — conceptual development, technical decisions, research into artworks and contexts, and rubric-aligned writing — under academic-integrity guidance. We do not produce artwork on the student's behalf.
Your lessons are taught by Cenk Avcı, Damla Görmez, Onur Kayhan and Sena Karabulut, who teach IB Visual Arts.

IB Visual Arts is a practice-based course centred on art-making as inquiry: students treat the classroom as a studio and develop their own lines of inquiry and visual language across three core areas, Create, Connect and Communicate. Under the new guide, first assessed in May 2027, none of the three assessment tasks is a written exam; all work is submitted to the IB digitally.
Art-making Inquiries Portfolio
Documenting experiments across art-making forms and creative strategies, with explicit inquiry questions or generative statements, in up to 15 screens and 3,000 words.
Connections Study (SL) / Artist Project (HL)
Situating your own work in context and connecting it with at least two artworks by different artists; at HL, realising a new artwork in a chosen context and presenting it on video.
Resolved Artworks
A coherent body of five resolved artworks with a rationale for the artistic intentions behind them; at HL, the selection process and artwork texts as well.
Create, Connect, Communicate
Building technical and conceptual skill, research into context, and the curating that brings work to an audience, side by side.
IB Visual Arts suits students who want to grow a real artistic practice, and gives a strong base for fine art, graphic design, architecture, fashion or media arts. The visual arts journal and the resolved artworks built over two years are also the raw material of an art-school application portfolio.
In our lessons Create, Connect and Communicate run together, with one-to-one mentoring on the Art-making Inquiries Portfolio, the Connections Study or Artist Project, and the Resolved Artworks. Students make every artwork and write every text themselves; we critique and guide.

IB Visual Arts exam format
Art-making Inquiries Portfolio
CourseworkSL: 40% / HL: 30%SL and HL, externally assessed (32 marks). From May 2027: one PDF of up to 15 screens and 3,000 words in total, plus a separate list of sources; the inquiry questions or generative statements must be shown explicitly.
Connections Study (SL)
CourseworkSL: 20%SL only, externally assessed (24 marks): one of the five resolved artworks from the IA is connected with the student's own context and with at least two artworks by different artists; up to 10 screens and 2,500 words, plus a list of sources.
Artist Project (HL)
CourseworkHL: 30%HL only, externally assessed (40 marks): a stand-alone artwork the student conceives and realises in a context of their choice; up to 12 screens and 2,500 words, a video of up to three minutes showing the work in that context (with a final statement of artistic intentions of up to 100 words), plus a list of sources.
Resolved Artworks (IA)
CourseworkSL: 40% / HL: 40%Internally assessed, moderated by the IB (SL 32 / HL 40 marks): five resolved artworks, each an image or a video of up to three minutes. SL: a rationale of up to 700 words on up to two screens. HL (Selected resolved artworks): five works chosen from at least eight; one PDF of up to eight screens with the rationale (700 words) and five artwork texts (1,000 words in total).

Type of review
How is the A–E grade estimated?
The IB sets the Extended Essay's grade boundaries again every session; there is no fixed table. So the estimate follows the grade descriptors the IB asks schools to use for predicted grades. The IB publishes your final grade at the end of the session.

The Visual Arts IA is a coherent body of five resolved artworks, marked by the teacher and moderated by the IB. It is worth 40% at both SL and HL; at HL the task is called Selected resolved artworks.

Sessions focus on critique, decision-making and rubric translation. We do not produce artwork on the student's behalf — final artwork remains the student's own work.

MistakeA portfolio of finished pieces with no inquiry behind them.
FixThe Art-making Inquiries Portfolio evidences art-making as inquiry: how a visual language developed through one or more lines of inquiry, across art-making forms and creative strategies. The inquiry questions or generative statements must appear explicitly, within 15 screens and 3,000 words.
MistakeA Connections Study (SL) that only describes the chosen artwork.
FixThe study connects one of your five IA artworks with your own context and with at least two artworks by different artists. The connections must be informed by research and show you understand the cultural significance of those two artworks.
MistakeTreating the Artist Project (HL) as another portfolio.
FixThe Artist Project is a stand-alone artwork realised in a context you choose, informed by investigation of that context, by at least two artworks by different artists and by dialogue. A video of up to three minutes shows the work in that context, and each section of the PDF has its own word count.
MistakeFive resolved artworks that don't read as one body of work.
FixThe IA looks for a coherent body of work and the synthesis of concept and form. The rationale (up to 700 words) explains the artistic intentions and choices that tie the five together; at HL it also shows how they were selected from at least eight works.
MistakeCitation gaps.
FixThe portfolio, the Connections Study and the Artist Project each need a separate list of sources. Missing citations are a predictable academic-integrity issue.
