How lessons work
Command terms as a vocabulary
We rewrite the same answer in 'state', 'describe', 'explain' and 'outline' styles so students know what each command is asking for and stop losing the explanation mark.
Quantitative ecology and genetics
Lincoln index, quadrat sampling, the chi-squared test and Hardy–Weinberg (HL) are drilled as named procedures rather than as 'extra'.
IA with academic integrity
We support research-question design, controls, data analysis and evaluation — but the experiment, raw data and writing remain the student's own. This boundary is taught explicitly.

IB Biology: common mistakes and study tips
MistakeConfusing 'state' with 'explain' command terms.
Fix'State' rewards a one-line factual answer; 'explain' demands mechanism. Underline the command term before writing.
MistakeVague mechanism descriptions ('it controls the cell').
FixTie every mechanism to molecules — receptor, second messenger, channel, enzyme — and to the cellular event it produces.
MistakeMisreading axes on data-based Paper 2 questions.
FixRead both axes out loud, including units and scale, before answering. Most lost data-question marks come from misreading the figure.
MistakeWeak experimental design in IA.
FixEvery IA needs a clear independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variables, and replicates. Missing one collapses the design mark.
MistakeEcology answers without quantitative reasoning.
FixPopulation and ecosystem questions reward Lincoln index, quadrat and chi-squared results — bring numbers, not adjectives.
MistakeTreating evolution as a single explanation.
FixSpecify mechanism — selection, drift, gene flow, mutation — and the source of variation each time, just like AP.
