How lessons work
Paper 1 algebraic reflexes
Most students under-prepare the no-calculator paper. We schedule a weekly Paper 1 block from Year 1 onwards so manipulation stays sharp.
IA scaffolding with academic integrity
The IA is coached as a research project: topic selection, exploration, refinement, conclusion. We never write the IA for the student — that would be a clear academic-integrity breach. We coach the process and review drafts against the IB rubric.
HL Paper 3 communication
Paper 3 rewards mathematical exposition. Students draft, get scored against the IB criteria, and rewrite — the same loop we use for the AP Stats FRQ.
Advice

MistakeTreating the IA as a project; missing the personal-engagement and reflection criteria.
FixPersonal engagement (3 marks) and reflection (3 marks) together weigh as much as use of mathematics (6 marks). Pick a topic the student genuinely cares about and document the iteration in writing.
MistakeUsing a calculator on Paper 1.
FixPaper 1 is non-calculator. Algebraic manipulation has to be reflexive — practise long division, factoring and trig identities by hand every week.
MistakeSkipping the 'show that' steps because the answer is given.
Fix'Show that' marks are awarded only for the working, not the answer. Always write each algebraic step.
MistakeStopping at the first answer in a multi-part question.
FixLater parts often depend on earlier parts. Read all parts before starting; use the structure to plan your time.
MistakeOn HL Paper 3, treating the long extended-response as 'just a longer question'.
