About the subject

IB Global Politics: what it covers and who it suits

IB Global Politics tutoring follows the guide first examined in May 2026: the core topics, Understanding power and global politics, and three thematic studies — Rights and justice, Development and sustainability, and Peace and conflict — with extended inquiries into global political challenges at HL. Each paper is drilled on its own terms, alongside the engagement project.

Your lessons are taught by Bora Çiftçi, Cansu Yavuz, Kaan Karahan and Pınar Yener, who teach IB Global Politics.

  • Core topics and thematic studies mapped to contemporary cases
  • HL inquiries into at least two topic areas (such as Borders, Health or Security) and at least two case studies
  • Paper 1 source work, Paper 2 essays and HL Paper 3 practised separately
Read more

IB Global Politics asks how the world works and what makes it change, through contemporary political issues. Power, sovereignty, legitimacy and interdependence run through every part of the course as contested concepts, and students are assessed on source analysis, essays and an engagement project carried out beyond the classroom.

  • Key concepts

Using power, sovereignty, legitimacy and interdependence as contested ideas that different stakeholders read differently, not as definitions to memorise.

  • Contemporary cases

The guide builds the course on examples from roughly the last two decades, so we keep a current, well-contextualised case bank for every topic.

  • Engagement project

Research and first-hand engagement with a political issue at local or community level, written up in a report of up to 2,000 words; HL adds a recommendation.

  • Paper technique

Source analysis and comparison for Paper 1, thematic and integrating essays for Paper 2, and case-study synthesis for HL Paper 3.

IB Global Politics maps closely onto what students go on to study in international relations, political science, law, diplomacy and public policy.

Our lessons read current events through the concepts of the core topics and thematic studies, with one-to-one guidance on the engagement project and the HL extended inquiries, from choosing an issue to the final report. Reports and essays remain the student's own work.

How lessons work

  • Concepts and theories first

We start with the key concepts and the core topic Theoretical perspectives in global politics — realism and liberalism alongside critical theories such as feminism, postcolonialism and social constructivism — because every paper rewards concepts applied to real cases.

  • Live case bank

The guide treats roughly the last two decades as contemporary, so we keep an annually refreshed bank of cases for each core topic and thematic study.

  • Engagement with academic integrity

The engagement project follows the guide's ethical guidelines. We help plan the engagement and the research; the report remains the student's own work.

Advice

IB Global Politics: common mistakes and study tips

  • MistakeTreating contested concepts as fixed definitions.

FixThe guide treats power, sovereignty, legitimacy and interdependence as contestable. Stronger answers show how different stakeholders understand them in a specific case.

  • MistakeSummarising sources in Paper 1.

FixPaper 1 has four structured questions (3, 4, 6 and 12 marks). Question 3 asks you to compare and/or contrast two sources, with a detailed running comparison for the top marks, and Question 4 to evaluate the sources and synthesise them with your own knowledge. Summary alone earns little.

  • MistakeNaming examples without explaining them.

FixThe guide says candidates should not just state an example but explain or contextualise it. One well-developed case beats a list of names.

  • MistakeAn engagement project report that narrates what you did.

FixThe report should analyse what the engagement contributed to your understanding of the political issue. Criterion C (Analysis and synthesis, 8 marks) and Criterion D (Evaluation and reflection, 6 marks) carry the most weight. Final written work remains the student's own work.

  • MistakePreparing HL for an oral presentation.

FixThe old HL oral component has been removed. HL is now assessed through Paper 3, a written stimulus-based paper (1 hour 30 minutes, 30% of the HL grade) answered from the student's own researched case studies.

FAQ

IB Global Politics Prep — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask most about IB Global Politics preparation.

Yes. Strong reading and structured-writing habits matter more than prior politics coursework.

No single theory is prescribed, but Theoretical perspectives in global politics is a core topic, and the guide encourages realism and liberalism alongside critical theories such as feminism, postcolonialism and social constructivism. Theory earns credit when it helps explain a case, especially in Paper 2.

Students choose a political issue at local or community level and explore it through research and engagement, for example through a Model United Nations simulation, a community council or a local youth initiative. The output is a report of up to 2,000 words; HL adds a separate recommendation of up to 400 words.

It depends on the level, the starting point and how close the exams are. We plan the hours together in a Free Intro Call.
