A-Level Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behaviour and a useful base for psychology, neuroscience, criminology, education and HR programmes. AQA Psychology is one of the most-taken A-Levels in the UK.

A-Level Psychology examines mind and behaviour through the lens of scientific research. The course spans the psychodynamic approach, cognitive neuroscience, classical conditioning, option topics such as aggression, and the issues and debates of the final paper, from nature–nurture to gender and culture in Psychology. Strong A-Level Psychology students develop genuine quantitative literacy via the research methods strand. Study tips

  • Learn each landmark study (Milgram, Ainsworth, etc.) using a structured template: aim, method, finding, evaluation.
  • On 16-mark essay questions, balance AO1 (knowledge), AO2 (application) and AO3 (evaluation) explicitly.
  • Don't neglect research methods; questions appear on every paper and the content is highly examinable.
  • Paper 3 takes one topic from each of three option groups: settle your choices early and study them in depth rather than spreading time thinly.

A-Level Psychology Prep — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask most about A-Level Psychology preparation.

No, the course starts from first principles. A foundation in biology helps with biopsychology but is not required.

It depends on the university. Some courses accept Psychology as a science where they ask for one; others do not, and courses such as Medicine usually ask for Chemistry and Biology. Check each course's entry requirements.

There is no official ranking. The specifications differ in how content is split across papers and which options they offer. What matters is knowing your own board's papers: for AQA 7182 that is three 2-hour papers of 96 marks each, with Research methods worth 48 marks on Paper 2 and assessed on every paper.

Moderately. At least 10% of the marks require mathematical skills at no lower than higher-tier GCSE level. In AQA 7182 you calculate descriptive statistics and the sign test, and choose and interpret the right inferential test (Spearman's rho, Pearson's r, Wilcoxon, Mann-Whitney, related and unrelated t-tests, chi-squared), giving a rationale for the choice.

It depends on the university: some courses count it as a science, others treat it as a social science. Confirm with your target universities.
