A-Level Geography: what it covers and who it suits

A-Level Geography is an interdisciplinary subject investigating the interaction between natural systems and human activity. In AQA 7037, Physical geography covers water and carbon cycles, one landscape option (hot desert, coastal or glacial systems and landscapes) and either hazards or ecosystems under stress; Human geography covers global systems and global governance, changing places and one of contemporary urban environments, population and the environment or resource security. The fieldwork investigation (NEA) demonstrates independent research and analysis skills. There is no open group timetable for this subject. If 3 or more of you sign up together, we open a private group course for you. A-Level Geography Prep — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask most about A-Level Geography preparation.

There is no single classification: physical geography sits close to the natural sciences and human geography to the social sciences. Universities treat it differently from course to course, so check whether a science degree you are considering counts Geography as a science.

AQA requires schools to give every student four days of fieldwork on both physical and human geography, locally or further afield, on full or part days, and to confirm this to AQA. The NEA data comes from fieldwork too. Common topics include coastal erosion, urban heat islands and river channel measurements.

Significant: in AQA 7037 it is worth 20% of the A-Level (60 marks, 3,000–4,000 words). Plan early, as the investigation runs alongside two years of taught content.

There is no official ranking; the boards differ in content options and exam structure rather than difficulty, and your school normally chooses the board. AQA 7037, shown on this page, has two exam papers and a fieldwork NEA; Cambridge International 9696 has four written papers and no NEA.
