About the subject

A-Level English Language and Literature: what it covers and who it suits

A-Level English Language and Literature (AQA 7707, OCR H474) is a hybrid course combining linguistic analysis with literary interpretation — the middle ground between pure Literature and pure Language A-Levels. The exam structure on this page follows AQA 7707.

  • Paper 1 Telling stories (40%, 3 hours): Remembered places (AQA Anthology: Paris), Imagined worlds and Poetic voices
  • Paper 2 Exploring conflict (40%, 2 hours 30 minutes): Writing about society (re-creative writing and critical commentary) and Dramatic encounters
  • NEA Making connections (20%): one 2,500–3,000-word investigation of a theme or technique across literary and non-literary texts

A-Level English Language & Literature combines literary analysis with linguistic approaches. Students analyse novels, poems and plays alongside non-literary texts such as advertising, speeches and journalism. It is ideal for journalism, creative writing, media and education.

A-Level English Language & Literature integrates two disciplines, training students simultaneously in critical reading and linguistic analysis. AQA 7707 is built around Telling stories (Remembered places, Imagined worlds, Poetic voices), Exploring conflict (Writing about society, Critical commentary, Dramatic encounters) and the Making connections investigation, working across literary and non-literary texts. Our programme provides integrated-analysis training, re-creative writing practice and NEA guidance that stays within AQA's rules.

How lessons work

  • Dual-framework reflex

Every text is read through both literary (theme, character, structure) and linguistic (phonology, lexis, pragmatics) lenses, so the dual reading becomes a habit — AO1 assesses integrated linguistic and literary study.

  • Bilingual bridge

For non-native English students we contrast English structures (subjunctive, modal verbs, register) with their L1 counterparts, which often deepens conceptual understanding.

  • Re-creative writing practice

Across the year students write short re-creative pieces on their Writing about society set text, each with a critical commentary, in preparation for Section A of Paper 2.

Advice

A-Level English Language and Literature: common mistakes and study tips

  • MistakeLabelling literary devices (metaphor, imagery) without analysing them.

FixEvery device must be tied to effect: 'X is a metaphor that conveys Y because Z'. Naming alone under-scores.

  • MistakeLinguistic analysis that stops at sentence type.

FixStrong answers work across several language levels — phonetics, phonology and prosodics, lexis and semantics, grammar, pragmatics, discourse — for each text.

  • MistakeComparative essays that treat the two texts in sequence.

FixIn comparative answers, bring both texts together around a shared theme or technique. In Making connections the analysis may treat the texts separately or together, but the conclusions must show how each text is illuminated by the other.

  • MistakePaper 2 re-creative writing without a serious critical commentary.

FixIn Writing about society the re-creative piece is worth 25 marks and the critical commentary 30. The commentary must explain the what, how and why of your choices and how you adapted the base text.

Study tips

  • Use linguistic and literary terminology together; AO1 assesses integrated linguistic and literary study.
  • Make conscious stylistic choices in your re-creative writing (Writing about society) and justify them in the critical commentary.
  • Practise pairs of literary and non-literary texts for comparative analysis.
  • Choose a Making connections theme or technique you genuinely care about — the component is built around independent enquiry.

It is a strong subject for English, translation, journalism, communications and law applications. Cambridge's English course, for example, accepts English Language and Literature as well as English Literature; check each programme's requirements before applying.
