Why A-Level Economics?

Why A-Level Economics matters

1:1 tutoring and small-group A-Level cohorts mapped to your target grade — designed for students applying to UK and European universities.

A-Level Economics develops the analytical and quantitative tools for understanding markets, firms, policy and the global economy. It is foundational for university economics, business, finance and public-policy programmes, and increasingly valued for computer science and politics applications.

TestPrep Europe's A-Level tutoring is fully personalised: every lesson focuses on your specific weak topics, drills past papers from your exam board, and walks through mark schemes so you understand exactly how marks are awarded. Our small-group cohorts (max 6 students) give you weekly accountability alongside students chasing the same grade. Whichever format you choose, our experienced A-Level instructors build a strategic plan aimed at A*.

Exam format

A-Level Economics exam structure

Exam boards: AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE

Review the paper-by-paper breakdown of the A-Level Economics exam. Our 1:1 tutoring is tailored to the exam board your school follows (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE), so your past-paper practice and mark-scheme drills line up exactly with the spec you're sitting.

Curriculum

A-Level Economics curriculum coverage

Unit-by-unit summary of the topics we cover, mapped to the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE specifications. Each unit in 1:1 lessons is paced and weighted to the individual student.

Demand and supply, elasticity, consumer/producer surplus
Market structures: perfect competition, monopoly, oligopoly
Market failure: externalities, public goods, information failure
Labour markets and wage determination
Strategy

A-Level Economics study strategies

Strategies our A-Level instructors recommend for top-grade A-Level Economics preparation. We integrate these techniques directly into 1:1 sessions and small-group practice rounds.

Diagrams are core: practise drawing every standard model (S/D, externality, AD/AS, Phillips curve, loanable funds) under time pressure.

For 25-mark essays, structure your answer around clear evaluation: short-run vs long-run, magnitude, conditional on assumptions, alternative views.

Read The Economist or the Financial Times weekly to build a stock of real-world examples — examiners reward economic relevance.

Synoptic Paper 3 cross-applies micro and macro; practise mapping micro mechanisms (e.g. cost-push) onto macro outcomes (e.g. inflation) explicitly.

Overview

About A-Level Economics

A-Level Economics covers microeconomics, macroeconomics and international economics in roughly equal measure across the two-year specification. The Edexcel and AQA boards differ in emphasis but cover broadly the same content. The course develops analytical writing, diagram-based reasoning and quantitative interpretation skills that map directly onto first-year university economics. Our programme drills the standard diagrams to fluency, builds an evaluation-oriented essay-writing technique and links every topic to current real-world events.

1:1 A-Level tutoring — personalised support

Our 1:1 A-Level tutoring is built entirely around the student's current grade, target grade, and the exam board they're sitting. Each session focuses on your specific weak topics, drills AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE past-paper questions, and walks through mark schemes so you understand exactly what's being assessed. Our instructors stay current with every spec revision so the work you put in mirrors what gets rewarded in the summer series.

Small-group A-Level courses — structured cohorts

Our small-group A-Level courses (max 6 students) give you a structured weekly programme alongside students chasing the same grade. The syllabus tracks the AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE specification unit-by-unit and includes weekly quizzes plus full-length mock exams to benchmark progress. Both online cohorts and on-campus options are available across our European hubs, with particular emphasis on students at British schools and international schools.

What is A-Level Economics tutoring?

A-Level Economics tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers AQA, OCR, Edexcel A and B, WJEC and Cambridge International (9708). Structure may vary by board and syllabus code. • AQA, OCR, Edexcel A and B, WJEC and Cambridge International specifications mapped explicitly

Common A-Level Economics mistakes

HataDiagrams without correct labels.

DüzeltmeAxes, curves and equilibria must be fully labelled. Examiners deduct for missing or wrong labels even when the answer is otherwise correct.

HataEvaluation treated as 'on the other hand'.

DüzeltmeTop-band evaluation weighs significance — magnitude, time, assumptions, alternatives — not just opposing arguments.

HataData-response answers without using the data.

DüzeltmeMark schemes reward integration of source figures into the argument. Generic theory answers under-score.

HataEssays without a clear thesis.

DüzeltmeTop bands open with a clear position and defend it; throat-clearing introductions cap.

HataMacro answers conflating fiscal and monetary policy.

DüzeltmeEach policy lever has its own diagram and transmission mechanism. We drill them as separate apparatus.

How TestPrep Europe teaches A-Level Economics

Diagram discipline

Every micro and macro answer leads with a labelled diagram. Diagram quality is half the technique gap between B and A* answers.

Evaluation as significance, not balance

Top-band evaluation weighs magnitude, time, assumptions and alternatives. We drill it as a structural skill rather than as 'mention both sides'.

Source-grounded data response

We drill the habit of citing source data inside the argument, not as a separate paragraph.

Sıkça sorulan sorular

Do I need A-Level Maths?

Strongly recommended for top economics degrees (e.g. LSE, Cambridge, UCL). Some require it; some don't. Confirm with target universities.

Which A-Level Economics spec is hardest?

OCR and Edexcel A are the most theoretically demanding. AQA and Edexcel B are slightly more applied. Cambridge International (9708) follows its own structure.

How important are diagrams?

Critical. Every essay and most data-response answers benefit from labelled diagrams.

How many tutoring hours are typical?

Students typically book 60–100 hours across two years. We start with a free diagnostic.
