A-Level Mathematics: what it covers and who it suits
A-Level Mathematics tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics across the two-year course. Structure varies by board: Pearson Edexcel 9MA0, AQA and OCR are linear, with every paper sat at the end of the course, while Cambridge International 9709 also allows a staged route that carries the AS result forward. We work to whichever specification (Pearson Edexcel, Cambridge International, AQA, OCR or OCR MEI) the student is enrolled in.

A-Level Mathematics is one of the most-taken A-Levels in the UK and a near-universal asset for STEM, finance and quantitative social-science applications. On Pearson Edexcel 9MA0 the course is split between Pure Mathematics (Algebra and functions, Trigonometry, Differentiation, Integration and more), Statistics and Mechanics. Applicants to maths and engineering at universities such as Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial usually aim for an A*.
A-Level Mathematics combines abstract reasoning with applied modelling. Pure Mathematics runs from Proof and Algebra and functions through Trigonometry to Differentiation and Integration; Statistics develops sampling, probability, distributions and hypothesis testing; Mechanics models motion and forces mathematically. A-Level Maths is required or preferred for most UK engineering, natural sciences, economics and computer science degrees. Lessons follow the student's own exam board, with past-paper drills, exam-technique practice and a steady focus on the algebraic fluency that separates A* candidates from A candidates.

There is no open group timetable for this subject. If 3 or more of you sign up together, we open a private group course for you. The price per student depends on how many subjects you take, with 30 hours of live lessons in each: 1 subject (30 hours) €1,031, 2 subjects (60 hours) €1,927, 3 subjects (90 hours) €2,689 and 4 subjects (120 hours) €3,496. Each student buys their own place online, and we let you know as soon as your group is ready.

Paper 2: Pure Mathematics 2 (Edexcel 9MA0)
33.3%2 hours, 100 marks, calculator allowed. The same Pure Mathematics content as Paper 1: the topics are not split between the two papers, and either may test any of them.
Paper 3: Statistics and Mechanics (Edexcel 9MA0)
33.3%2 hours, 100 marks. Section A Statistics: Statistical sampling, Data presentation and interpretation, Probability, Statistical distributions, Statistical hypothesis testing. Section B Mechanics: Quantities and units in mechanics, Kinematics, Forces and Newton's laws, Moments.

A-Level Mathematics: common mistakes and study tips
MistakeForgetting the constant of integration on indefinite integrals.
Fix+C is part of the answer. Examiners deduct for its absence.
MistakeConfusing radians and degrees on calculator-based trig questions.
FixRead the interval in the question: 0 ≤ θ < 360° means degrees, 0 ≤ θ < 2π means radians. Differentiating or integrating trig functions always works in radians.
MistakeMixing dy/dx, d²y/dx² and dx/dt notations on parametric or implicit problems.
FixWrite the variable of differentiation explicitly: dy/dt vs dy/dx. Don't shorten until the line is unambiguous.
MistakeOn hypothesis testing, stating the conclusion without referring to H₀ and the significance level.
FixConclusion template: 'Because p (…) is less / greater than α = …, we reject / fail to reject H₀. There is / is not sufficient evidence that …'.
MistakeSkipping diagrams on Mechanics questions.
FixEvery Mechanics question gets a labelled diagram before any equation; drawing weight, normal reaction, tension and friction first stops a force going missing from the equations.
Study tips
- Once a topic is finished, work through your own board's past-paper questions on it, then widen out to other boards: Edexcel, AQA and Cambridge International phrase questions differently, and seeing all three sharpens technique.
- Build a conceptual link between differentiation and integration; many cross-topic questions exploit this connection.
- Master your calculator without becoming dependent on it; calculator-free practice exposes weaknesses in algebraic manipulation.
- For the Statistics section, work with real datasets rather than textbook problems to internalise hypothesis-testing intuition.
