A-Level Accounting teaches the recording, reporting and analysis of financial information. On the AQA specification (7127), the financial accounting side runs from The double entry model and Verification of accounting records to the accounts of sole traders, partnerships and limited companies and Accounting for organisations with incomplete records; the management accounting side covers Budgeting, Marginal costing, Standard costing and variance analysis, Absorption and activity based costing, and Capital investment appraisal. Paper 1 examines the financial accounting sections and Paper 2 the management accounting sections, while sections such as Analysis and evaluation of financial information and The impact of ethical considerations appear in both. How lessons work
Layout-first habits
We teach layouts as part of the answer — income statement, statement of financial position, statement of cash flows — because mark schemes reward consistent presentation.
Adjustment checklist
A fixed end-of-year checklist (closing inventory, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, irrecoverable debts, revaluations) prevents avoidable mark loss.
Ratio interpretation in context
Calculation earns only part of the marks. We coach interpretation — what a ratio means, what its trend implies, what action would address it.
Advice
A-Level Accounting: common mistakes and study tips
MistakeLayouts that don't follow A-Level conventions.
FixMark schemes reward standard A-Level layouts. Non-standard layouts under-score.
MistakeAdjustments forgotten in final accounts.
FixAlways run a checklist: closing inventory, accruals, prepayments, depreciation, irrecoverable debts, revaluations.
MistakeRatios calculated but not interpreted.
FixCalculation and interpretation are separately marked. Numbers without commentary cap.
MistakeCash-flow statements computed by formula without reasoning.
FixAQA asks for the statement of cash flows under IAS 7 using the indirect method: reconcile profit to the cash flow from operating activities step by step, showing each adjustment, not just totals.
MistakeInvestment appraisal answers that stop at the numbers.
FixAQA 7127 uses payback and net present value; strong answers weigh the result against the assumptions (cost of capital, cash-flow estimates) and against non-financial factors before recommending.
Study tips
- Learn the standard layouts — income statement, statement of financial position, statement of cash flows — and practise writing them cleanly.
- Understand the conceptual logic of double-entry rather than memorising it mechanically.
- Solve numerical questions in volume — on AQA 7127 at least 20% of the A-Level marks assess quantitative skills.
- On variance analysis, explain the cause of each variance, not just its value.
