About the subject
IGCSE English Language: what it covers and who it suits
IGCSE English Language tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers Cambridge International First Language English (0500 / 0990), Cambridge English as a Second Language (0510 / 0991 / 0993) where appropriate, and Pearson Edexcel English Language A (4EA1) and English Language B (4EB1). Structure may vary by board and syllabus code. We teach reading-comprehension technique, directed-writing technique and analytical writing, with explicit rubric language.

1Reading: explicit and implicit meaning
- Retrieving information, inferring meaning, summarising tone and purpose.
2Reading: writer's effects
- Analysing word choice, imagery, sentence structure and how language creates effect.
- Writer's-effects question is consistently the lowest-scoring item — pattern-spotting beats label-spotting.
3Directed writing
- Letters, articles, speeches, reports — purpose, audience and form discipline.
4Composition
- Descriptive and narrative writing; control of structure, viewpoint and language.
5Summary skills
- Selecting relevant points, paraphrasing, condensing without distortion of meaning.
6Spoken language (where offered)
- Cambridge's optional Speaking and Listening Test (individual talk and conversation) is endorsed separately and does not count towards the grade.

Text-type as a syllabus item
Article, speech, letter and report are taught as separate sub-skills because mark schemes test their conventions explicitly.

We close every paragraph with a sentence-variety check — clause structure, punctuation, vocabulary range.
