What is IGCSE Mathematics tutoring?

IGCSE Mathematics tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers number, algebra, geometry, statistics and calculus essentials in line with the major exam boards. Structure may vary by board and syllabus code — we work to whichever specification (Cambridge International 0580 / 0980, Pearson Edexcel 4MA1, AQA, OCR or other) the student is enrolled in.

  • Core and Extended (or Foundation and Higher tier) drilled separately
  • Exam technique — show working, time per mark — built in from the first session
  • Calculator and non-calculator paper strategies practised apart
  • Past papers from the student's actual board / syllabus code

IGCSE Mathematics syllabus map

Number

Integers, fractions, percentages, ratio, indices, standard form, surds (Extended).

Sınavda yeri: Tested across both papers; weak number fluency drags every other topic down.

Algebra and graphs

Manipulation, equations, inequalities, sequences, functions, graph sketching and transformations.

Sınavda yeri: Heavy weight on Extended; algebraic accuracy decides Grade 8 / 9 outcomes.

Coordinate geometry

Lines, gradients, midpoints, equation of a line, parallel and perpendicular.

Geometry and mensuration

Angle reasoning, similar and congruent shapes, circle theorems, area, volume and surface area.

Trigonometry

Right-angled trig, sine and cosine rules, bearings and 3-D applications (Extended).

Statistics and probability

Averages, spread, cumulative frequency, histograms, tree diagrams and conditional probability.

Vectors and transformations

Vectors in 2-D, magnitude, position vectors, geometric proofs (Extended).

How IGCSE Mathematics is assessed

Short-answer paperProcedural fluency on routine algebra, number, geometry and statistics.Cambridge International (0580 / 0980) and Pearson Edexcel (4MA1) split this differently between calculator and non-calculator; structure may vary by board and syllabus code.
Extended-response paperMulti-step reasoning, problem-solving, modelling and proof-style questions.Higher tier students are expected to handle Extended content; tier choice should follow a real past-paper diagnostic, not a guess.
Investigation / coursework (where offered)Cambridge ICE candidates may sit an additional paper; not offered on every Edexcel route. We confirm the exact syllabus code with the family before planning.

Common IGCSE Mathematics mistakes

HataSkipping working on multi-mark questions because the answer 'looked easy'.

DüzeltmeMost boards award method marks — write at least one line of working per mark.

HataConfusing similar shapes' length, area and volume scale factors.

DüzeltmeLength scales as k, area as k², volume as k³. Always write the chain before substituting.

HataMis-applying SOH-CAH-TOA in non-right-angled triangles.

DüzeltmeSOH-CAH-TOA only works in right-angled triangles. For others use the sine rule, cosine rule, or area formula.

HataReading the wrong axis on a cumulative-frequency curve.

DüzeltmeCumulative frequency is on the y-axis; quartiles are read off the y-axis values 0.25n, 0.5n, 0.75n. Mark these before reading off the x-axis.

HataOn the calculator paper, not using the calculator's fraction or memory keys.

DüzeltmePractise the calculator workflow until it's reflexive — keying numbers from scratch costs time.

How TestPrep Europe teaches IGCSE Mathematics

Board-specific past papers

We tutor to the student's actual specification — Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, AQA, OCR or another board — so past-paper practice matches the May/June paper format the student will sit.

Method-mark reflex

Showing working is drilled until it's automatic. Students stop losing easy method marks on the paper they could otherwise solve mentally.

Calculator vs non-calculator separation

Each topic is practised in both formats. Students who only practise on a calculator routinely lose marks on the non-calculator paper.

Which IGCSE Mathematics specification do you tutor?

We tutor to whichever specification the student is enrolled in. Cambridge International (0580 / 0980), Pearson Edexcel (4MA1), AQA, OCR International and others differ in tier names, calculator allowance and grading thresholds. Always tell us the board and syllabus code.

What's the difference between IGCSE Maths and IGCSE Further Pure?

IGCSE Mathematics is the standard course taken by most students. IGCSE Further Pure Mathematics is an additional, more demanding course that overlaps with the early A-Level Maths content — useful preparation for AS / A-Level Mathematics.

What grade is needed for AS / A-Level Mathematics?

Most schools require an A or A* (or 7+) in IGCSE Mathematics — and often Further Pure — before allowing entry to A-Level Maths. Confirm with the school.

How much past-paper practice is enough?

We typically schedule 6–10 full timed past papers in the final term, with full markscheme review after each. The exact number depends on the diagnostic baseline.
