IGCSE Mathematics tutoring at TestPrep Europe covers number, algebra, geometry, statistics and calculus essentials in line with the major exam boards. IGCSE Mathematics exam format

  • Non-calculator paper (Cambridge Paper 1 Core / Paper 2 Extended)

    Structured and unstructured questions without a calculator: 1 hour 30 minutes and 80 marks (Core) or 2 hours and 100 marks (Extended), 50% of the grade. — Introduced with the 2025–2027 Cambridge 0580 / 0980 syllabus. Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 has no non-calculator paper: a calculator is allowed on both of its 2-hour papers.

  • Calculator paper (Cambridge Paper 3 Core / Paper 4 Extended)

    Same length and marks as the non-calculator paper, 50% of the grade; a scientific calculator is required. Multi-step reasoning and problem-solving throughout. — Extended (Cambridge) and Higher (Edexcel) candidates are expected to handle the full content; tier choice should follow real past-paper results, not a guess.

  • Coursework

    Neither Cambridge 0580 / 0980 nor Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 has a coursework or investigation component; the grade comes entirely from the two written papers. — We confirm the exact syllabus code with the family before planning.

    We tutor to the student's actual specification — Cambridge International, Pearson Edexcel, AQA, OCR or another board — so past-paper practice matches the May/June paper format the student will sit.

  • Method-mark reflex

    Showing working is drilled until it's automatic. Students stop losing easy method marks on the paper they could otherwise solve mentally.

  • Calculator vs non-calculator separation

    Each topic is practised in both formats. Students who only practise on a calculator routinely lose marks on the non-calculator paper.

IGCSE Mathematics: common mistakes and study tips

  • MistakeSkipping working on multi-mark questions because the answer 'looked easy'.

    FixMost boards award method marks — write at least one line of working per mark.

  • MistakeConfusing similar shapes' length, area and volume scale factors.

    FixLength scales as k, area as k², volume as k³. Always write the chain before substituting.

  • MistakeMis-applying SOH-CAH-TOA in non-right-angled triangles.

    FixSOH-CAH-TOA only works in right-angled triangles. For others use the sine rule, cosine rule, or area formula.

  • MistakeReading the wrong axis on a cumulative-frequency curve.

    FixCumulative frequency is on the y-axis; quartiles are read off the y-axis values 0.25n, 0.5n, 0.75n. Mark these before reading off the x-axis.

  • MistakeOn the calculator paper, not using the calculator's fraction or memory keys.

IGCSE Mathematics Prep — Frequently Asked Questions

The questions students ask most about IGCSE Mathematics preparation.

We tutor to whichever specification the student is enrolled in. Cambridge International (0580 / 0980), Pearson Edexcel (4MA1), AQA, OCR International and others differ in tier names, calculator allowance and grading thresholds. Always tell us the board and syllabus code.

IGCSE Mathematics is the standard course taken by most students. IGCSE Further Pure Mathematics is an additional, more demanding course that overlaps with the early A-Level Maths content — useful preparation for AS / A-Level Mathematics.

Most schools require an A or A* (or 7+) in IGCSE Mathematics — and often Further Pure — before allowing entry to A-Level Maths. Confirm with the school.

We typically schedule 6–10 full timed past papers in the final term, with full markscheme review after each. The exact number depends on where the student starts.
