Upper Level SSAT Analogies: Find the Relationship First
A focused method for Upper Level SSAT analogies: describe the relationship first, keep its direction, and eliminate pairs that match only the topic.
In this article (4 sections)
An analogy asks you to match a relationship, not merely two words that belong to the same topic. If you look at the answer choices before describing the first pair, a familiar word can pull you toward the wrong connection. Start with a sentence that explains how the words fit together.
The Upper Level SSAT verbal section has 60 questions: 30 synonyms and 30 analogies, with 30 minutes for the section. Official section information. Source checked: 14 October 2026.
Build a precise relationship sentence
Read the first pair from left to right. Instead of saying “these things are connected,” name the connection: “the first is a part of the second,” or “the first is a tool used to do the second.” Then apply exactly that sentence to each proposed pair.
Keep the direction fixed. A leaf belongs to a tree; a tree does not belong to a leaf in the same way. Also check the strength of your sentence. “Both are useful” is too loose to distinguish a matching relationship from an unrelated pair.
Worked example 1: part to whole
These two questions are original practice examples written for this article. They are not actual SSAT questions. Choose the pair that best matches the relationship.
Petal is to flower as:
A. page is to book
B. book is to shelf
C. author is to novel
D. tree is to leaf
E. pen is to write
Answer: A. A petal is a constituent part of a flower. A page is a constituent part of a book. The same sentence works without changing direction.
B gives an object and a place where it can be kept. C gives a creator and a creation. D reverses the relationship: the first item is the whole, and the second is a part. E pairs a tool with its function. Several choices concern books or writing, but sharing a topic does not make them equivalent.

Worked example 2: tool to function
Thermometer is to measure as:
A. doctor is to hospital
B. hot is to warm
C. scissors are to cut
D. cut is to scissors
E. glass is to window
Answer: C. A thermometer is a tool used to measure; scissors are a tool used to cut. Each pair moves from the instrument to its function.
A connects a worker with a workplace. B describes a difference in degree. D contains the correct tool and action but puts them in the opposite order. E connects a material with something made from it. The exact relationship matters more than whether the words seem sensible together.
Use your mistakes to sharpen the method
After each practice question, write the relationship sentence beside your chosen answer. If that sentence fits several choices, make it more specific. If it fits none, reconsider your interpretation of the original pair. When an unfamiliar word prevents a decision, mark that gap separately from a mistake in direction or logic. These are different problems and need different practice.
