How many seconds per IMAT question can a 700+ candidate actually spend

Build a section-by-section time budget for the IMAT's 100 minutes, 60 questions: how to triage, when to skip, and which item types eat the clock.

The IMAT gives candidates 100 minutes to answer 60 questions, and that single ratio — 1 minute 40 seconds per item — is the structural fact that shapes every preparation decision. A student who walks into the exam hall without an internal time budget will treat every question as equally important, which is the fastest way to leave five or six easy marks on the table. This article builds a working pacing model for the four sections, names the question families that most reliably break a candidate's rhythm, and turns a vague feeling of "running out of time" into a concrete per-section minute allocation.

Why 100 minutes for 60 questions is the wrong mental image

Most candidates first read the format as "100 minutes, 60 questions" and divide. They end up with the figure of 100 seconds per item and assume a steady, metronomic pace. In practice, the IMAT does not reward a uniform pace. Section 1 (Logic and Problem Solving, 10 questions) and Section 2 (Scientific Reading, 4 reading passages) behave very differently from Sections 3 and 4 (Biology 23 questions, Chemistry 15, Physics 8, Mathematics 4), and the official split of 10 + 20 + 30 across the three larger blocks is only a starting hint, not a rule. A 700+ candidate I have tutored rebuilt their plan after their first mock: they were spending 2 minutes 15 seconds on hard chemistry calculations and 50 seconds on easy logic puzzles, which is the exact inversion of what the marks reward. The point is not speed for its own sake; the point is matching the seconds you spend to the seconds the question is worth.

The four-section shape of the paper

  • Section 1 — Logic and Problem Solving: 10 questions, problem sets, spatial reasoning, numerical puzzles.
  • Section 2 — Scientific Reading and Critical Reasoning: 4 passages with 5 questions each, 20 items total.
  • Section 3 — Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics: 46 subject-specific items in mixed order (Biology 23, Chemistry 15, Physics 8, Mathematics 4, per the test blueprint).

Note that "Section 2" in some preparatory materials is called General Knowledge or Culture Generale, but the current IMAT blueprint organises the reading and critical-reasoning load into its own block. Treat any resource that contradicts the official MIUR/Cambridge syllabus line as out of date, regardless of the publication year on the cover.

A section-by-section time budget that survives contact with the real paper

Below is the budget I would hand a candidate aiming for the upper score band. Treat the numbers as a starting point, not a verdict — they will shift by 1–2 minutes once you know your personal slow sections.

The buffer matters more than candidates think. On a 60-item paper, a 10-minute reserve is the difference between guessing on question 58 and reading it twice. The buffer is created by the early sections, not borrowed from the later ones — if you have not banked it by the time Section 3 begins, you will not have it.

The two-stage model: triage in the first 30 seconds, commit in the next 90

Every item on the IMAT deserves the same two-stage treatment. In the first 30 seconds, you decide whether the question is a "solve now", a "solve later", or a "best guess and move". In the next 60 to 90 seconds, you either solve it or you mark your guess and leave. Candidates who skip the triage stage try to solve every question as if it were a five-marks-of-credit item, and they pay for it in two ways: easy items that should have taken 40 seconds take 95, and hard items that should have been parked take 180. For most candidates I work with, the triage decision is the single skill that produces the largest score jump, larger than any content review.

How to triage a logic item

Logic and Problem Solving items in the first 10 questions come from a small bank of families: truth-teller/liar puzzles, ordering, spatial rotation, pattern completion, and numerical sequences. If a numerical-sequence question is not yielding to a clear rule (difference, ratio, alternating pattern) within 30 seconds, flag it. Most candidates lose 3 minutes on a sequence that has no clean rule and that the test writer placed precisely to absorb that 3 minutes.

How to triage a science item

For the 30 subject-specific questions, the triage question is different: do I recognise the underlying principle within 15 seconds? If the question is asking for a specific numeric value in a titration or a kinematics problem, and you cannot name the formula in that window, mark a best guess, flag the question, and keep moving. The mark cost of a wrong guess is the same as the mark cost of a wrong solve, but the time cost of an unfinished guess is roughly 90 seconds per question you can no longer afford.

Common pacing mistakes and how to fix each

  • Spending the first 5 minutes reading the test instructions again. You will have read them in the practice papers. Use the 30 seconds before the clock starts to confirm section boundaries, not to read cover-to-cover.
  • Treating Section 2 reading questions as ordinary reading comprehension. The passages are dense, often 500+ words, and the questions target argument structure as much as fact recall. Read the question stem first, then scan the passage; you will cut your reading time by roughly a third.
  • Skipping the buffer because "I never have time to review". The buffer is not a review slot; it is a triage slot. When a flagged question comes back to you with 8 minutes left, you are using the buffer, not stealing it.
  • Spending 3 minutes on a physics calculation you cannot finish. Partial-credit reasoning does not apply. A clean guess is worth the same as a half-finished calculation that runs out of time on item 41.

Building a 4-week pacing plan around this budget

Knowing the budget is the easy part. Training the budget is the work. For candidates in the final month, I recommend a 4-week sequence rather than a flat "do more papers" cycle. The plan below assumes you have at least eight past papers available and a way to time yourself honestly.

  1. Week 1 — Section-isolated timed sets. Take 13 minutes to do 10 logic items, 22 minutes to do 20 reading items, and 55 minutes to do 30 science items, each in isolation. Do not mix them yet. The goal is to learn the per-section envelope.
  2. Week 2 — Full-length untimed papers, with self-marking on pacing. Take the paper under relaxed time and mark every item where you spent more than 110 seconds. These are your "speed surgery" candidates, not your "content" candidates.
  3. Week 3 — Full-length timed papers, with a hard clock. Sit the full 100 minutes. After each paper, write a 5-line debrief: where did the clock run ahead of me? Which section ate the buffer?
  4. Week 4 — Two full timed papers per week, plus a 30-minute triage drill on Mondays. The triage drill is a single section under tight time, scored only on accuracy against the clock, not on raw accuracy.

By the end of week 4, a candidate should be able to look at a paper and predict — to within two minutes — which section will be their slowest. That prediction is what you bring into the exam hall. Without it, the paper decides your pacing for you.

What to do in the final 10 minutes

The last 10 minutes of an IMAT paper look nothing like the first 10. By minute 90, a well-paced candidate has a small pile of flagged items and a clean head. Walk through the flagged pile in the order of section, not the order of personal preference. If you cannot solve a flagged chemistry item in 60 seconds, change the answer only if the new answer is a more defensible guess, not a hunch. A common and costly error is the last-minute swap from a reasoned answer to an un-reasoned one, driven by panic rather than fresh evidence. If your first answer had a method behind it, the bar for changing it is a real method behind the new one.

Time management on the IMAT is not about being fast. It is about knowing which 50 of the 60 questions deserve your full attention, which 8 deserve a careful guess, and which 2 deserve an immediate flag.
