The single-answer multiple-choice question is the most common item type on GRE Quantitative Reasoning, and it is also the item type where the largest score swings are caused by the smallest reading errors. ETS draws 20 of the 27 unscored-and-scored Quant items from this family per test, with five answer choices labelled A through E, exactly one correct, and a 1-minute 53-second average budget. Candidates who treat these as miniature algebra drills often arrive at the right number for the wrong reason, while candidates who read the stem as a logic puzzle routinely clear the 165 threshold without working harder.
What follows is a working tutor's map of the five stem shapes that show up most often, the three misread patterns that flip correct answers into wrong ones, and the elimination habits that hold up under the adaptive scoring algorithm. Every example sits inside a single-answer MCQ on the GRE General Test, not Data Interpretation or Quantitative Comparison.
What "multiple-choice (one answer)" actually means on test day
ETS defines the single-answer MCQ as a standalone question with exactly one correct response chosen from five options. There is no partial credit, no "all of the above", and no special formatting that lets you skip the algebra entirely. The item is scored as 1 or 0, and in the section-level adaptive model a run of three or four correct answers in this family is the most common way to push from 160 to 166 in Quant.
Three structural points matter before any tactical work:
- The question stem is self-contained. No table, no chart, no pair to compare. If your eye drifts toward a figure, you are probably looking at a Data Interpretation item, not a single-answer MCQ.
- Five choices, exactly one correct, with distractors engineered around the most plausible algebra mistake. ETS writes the wrong answers first, then the right one.
- You have about 1 minute 53 seconds on average. Harder items at the end of the section eat closer to 3 minutes; easy items at the start can fall to 45 seconds.
Five stem shapes that decide the choice
After grading a few hundred of these, I would group single-answer MCQ stems into five recurring shapes. The shape tells you which distractor family ETS is going to bait you with, which is more useful than memorising formulas.
1. The value-of expression stem
The stem asks for a single numerical value, often after one substitution. The five choices are usually close to one another; the correct answer sits within plus or minus 10 percent of the most attractive distractor. Example shape: "If 3x + 7 = 5x − 11, what is the value of 4x?" The trap is solving for x, then forgetting to multiply. Pick the choice that has 18, not 9.
2. The "which of the following" condition stem
The stem describes a constraint and asks which option satisfies it. ETS tends to hide the constraint across two sentences, so the working move is to underline the condition, then test each choice against the constraint rather than deriving the constraint algebraically. The correct answer is almost always the one that needs the most negotiation to satisfy the rule.
3. The ratio / percent / fraction-of stem
The stem mixes two of: percent, ratio, fraction, decimal. The distractor pattern is almost always a sign error (taking a percent of the complement) or a units slip (cents vs dollars, weeks vs days). My rule of thumb: convert everything to a single unit before computing, then re-read the question to confirm you answered the unit it actually asked for.
4. The "must be true" geometry stem
No diagram, no coordinates, just a textual constraint on a shape. The five choices are usually statements about angles, sides, or areas. The trap is that two of the choices are always true, one is always false, and the correct answer is the conditional one that requires the given constraint. Practise spotting the difference between a statement that is always true in geometry and one that is true only because of the constraint in the stem.
